At the end of the season, in late fall, we plant nursery size seed in our bay nurseries and can have large plantable seed available for the following spring. The new facility proved to be a great addition to our existing nursery operation in West Creek, NJ. The hard clam and oyster seed produced by our hatchery are reared in the nurseries at both sites in upwellers and raceways, maximizing our seed production. The clam seed grow in raceways and feed on the abundance of phytoplankton that naturally occurs in the productive Great Bay Estuary. Bayfarm has been spawning and rearing Hard Clams or Northern Quahogs (Mercenaria mercenaria) for over 20 years.
